This one-hour virtual presentation will explain how the African American and Black communities are disproportionately affected by human trafficking. The presentation does not contain an overview of trafficking, but instead marks some of the destructive stereotypes created during the transatlantic slave trade and how they create barriers today. We’ll trace inequality in various systems and institutions and how these can create vulnerabilities for trafficking. Throughout, we’ll learn about the work of Black authors, researchers, and activists. The presentation will end with action items for all of us to empower our communities and create positive change.
Content warning: this presentation mentions rape, lynching, and other examples of sexual and physical violence.
